The CofE Church of St Benedict Biscop is situated in the village of Wombourne in South Staffordshire. It is at OS grid ref. SO877932 just off the A449 Wolverhampton to Kidderminster road, about 5 miles south of Wolverhampton. Its also in the Birmingham A-Z, in Church Road 4B40. The church has its own website which can be found here.
It is one of the southern most towers of Lichfield Diocese and the ringers are mostly members of the Lichfield and Walsall Archdeaconries Society of Change Ringers , although, being a bit "out on a limb" so to speak, we also have loose ties with Shropshire, Hereford and Worcester societies.
I am told that it is the only church in England dedicated to this particular saint. This is a little odd, since I am also told that St Benedict Biscop is the patron saint of glassblowers, and whilst glass blowing is a local craft (associated with Brierley Hill and Stourbridge to the south of Wombourne by a few miles) it has never to my knowledge been practised in Wombourne itself. The traditional cottage industries of the village being nail and chain making. If anybody has any further information on this subject please send it to us so that I can update these pages.
